The first political poem I’m writing in 1.5 years. The content is not completely original; some of the information comes from two of the greatest books that have changed Indian society in many ways – “Annihilation of Caste” by Babasaheb Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and “Hatred In The Belly” by Ambedkar Age Collective. Here goes the content:
It has been twelve days
Since the much-hyped 75th Independence Anniversary
For which the Prime Minister pulled out all the stops
Whether it be asking every individual
To wear his/her patriotism on his/her sleeves
By changing his/her social media display pic
To match that of the Indian flag
Or asking every family
To hoist the flag in their house
Or even,
Ensuring that almost every locomotive was painted
In the tri-colour livery
Certainly, no country has ever celebrated its independence
With this much fanfare
However, does Independence truly matter
To the majority of the nation?
The sheer extravagance of the celebrations
Is nothing more than a masquerade
In order to conveniently deflect attention
From the vast ocean of problems
This country has been facing
And for which the government has done next to nothing
To rectify any of them
Not just the present government, mind you
But majority of the governments
That have come and gone
Like a military procession
We are not a truly independent nation
And have never been
A so-called harmonious country
With a multitude of diverse languages, religions and cultures
In reality, divided by thousands of castes
Out of which, an elite minority holds much sway
Accumulating a vast number of resources
And denying even basic things
Like affordable education and healthcare
To the rest of the country
As long as this elite minority remains in power
Whether socially, economically or politically
And caste, aka Brahminism, is not annihilated
Independence Day will mean nothing, absolutely nothing
To the majority of the nation
