Saying Goodbye To An Ex-Best Friend

I am doing my best to forget one of my ex-best friends who ghosted me over a silly Facebook comment and hopefully this would be one of my last poems about her. Here goes the content:

I always cared for you

As much as Harry Potter did

For his best mate Ronald Weasley

And vice-versa, of course

I hurt you never

And always did my best

To ensure you were happy

I even went the extra mile for you

Coming to college as late

As one has come to expect

With most Indian trains

So that I could buy you a gift

For your twentieth birthday!

I always made sure

That I would stand up for you

When you needed it the most

Even if it meant

That I’d risk losing a friend or two in the process!

Never did I get angry with you

Even if you got angry with me sometimes

For the silliest of reasons!!

I even invited you over to my home

Along with a bunch of other friends, of course

And my mother and grandmother went to great trouble

To ensure that you all had the best lunch ever

Above all, I supported you unconditionally

As much as I could

I was there for you

On your best and worst days

I thought you truly cared for me

Why, it was YOU

Who initiated conversations with me in the first place

At a time when I was too shy

To speak with girls in general!

YOU wanted to be my friend

Seriously, I have lost track

Of the number of times

You’ve called me your best friend

Sometimes, even brother!!

After all this, you cut me off

Just like that

That too, over a harmless Facebook comment!!

I apologised to you many a time

For a mistake I made not!!

But you just ignored me

The way bad umpires sometimes ignore the appeals of bowlers

Even when it is as obvious

As the Sun setting in the West

That the batsman is out!!

You crushed my heart

The way SA crush any team these days

When they get to have the first strike

You shattered my self-belief

The way my old Marathi teacher did

About twenty-five years ago

When she shamelessly compared me

To a rather dull and unintelligent character

From one of my books!

You may be as rich

As the Malfoys have historically been

But you possess not

The dedication and hard work

Which is required to get the job done

You may have many a friend

But I am doubly sure

That none of them would come to your aid

Should you be down in the dumps

Because, as far as your personality goes

You are even more repulsive

Than the evil Dolores Umbridge!!

Well, goodbye, my so-called best friend and sister

And for once, try to be a good human being

Even if costeth you your life!!
