A Rare Gem Of A Friend

Poem dedicated to Shruti, a family friend of mine; here is the content:

Not every day do we talk

Nor every year do we meet

In fact, we live countries apart

However, I believe not the popular assumption

That long distance relationships work not

Don’t we know the famous saying

“When there is a will, there is a way”

Well, to us it applies too

True lovers always manage to find a way

To make their relationship work

Irrespective of the distance that separates them

Well, to true friends it applies too

Especially if their mothers are there for each other

Through thick and thin

Thou art smart and funny

Not to mention, cool as a cucumber

Even when stuck in a Catch 22 situation

However, what truly warms my heart

Is the fact that you judge never

And you get angry

As often as South Africa wins a Cricket World Cup!!

Always do people remember the big things

Which their loved ones do for them

However, when it comest to you

Never do I forget the small things

Not too long ago, I was drowning

In a pool of insecurities

And trying in vain

To focus on work

A task that was proving to be even more difficult

Than getting a job in UK is, nowadays!!

A call with you changed everything

In a manner reminiscent of how Indian cricket had changed

After that glorious World Cup victory in 1983!!

You were quite the expert listener

Not even once did you interrupt my long monologue

And you always knew

How to make me feel better

However, at the same time

You minced words not

Oh boy, could I relate to you

I too sugarcoat not

It also amazes me

How you remain unfazed

Even after hearing the most shocking things

Anyway, most valuable were your words of advice

Not only was my self-confidence boosted

I also learned to question a few things

Which I had earlier believed, to be gospel truth

As far as friends go

Thou truly art a rare gem

And do I want to let you know

That, should you need help ever

I will be absent never

Also, be the way you are

And may the Almighty bless thee

With oodles of happiness, peace and prosperity
