You Were My First Love

Poem dedicated to my first ever love, a girl I fell in love with during my MBA days. Here goes the content:

You were my first love

Usually no one forgets his/her first love

Particularly in your case

You were very shy

Something that turned me on

Rather than putting me off

Moreover, you had a heart of gold

And always saw the good in everyone

It usually takes time

For me to develop a liking for someone

However, you were a notable exception

After our second meeting itself

I was convinced

That there was something special about you

I remember the occasion well

I was sitting with a group of friends in the canteen

And was feeling rather left out

Then I saw you sitting alone at another table

And decided to join you

Taking my coffee with me

Being shy by nature, especially as far as girls were concerned

It required some courage on my part

To even sit next to you

Let alone crack a conversation

However, your extremely sweet nature

Along with your excellent English communication

Made me feel at home

Since then, there was no looking back

Of course, I could never pluck up the courage

To confess my feelings

However, your mere presence

Left me with a smile on my face

Whenever I came to college

And thinking about you

Actually helped me focus on my studies

There was that memorable moment

When we had a debate on a silly movie

You even helped me with some tax calculations

Our conversations were usually brief

However, the very act of talking to you

Made my heart flutter

And it was with a lump in my throat

That I finally said goodbye to you

At the end of our college years

And a mere two years later

When I finally confessed my feelings

I learned that you had always known

Something that truly disarmed me

You really are an amazing woman

And by the time I finally manage to forget you

I would have already snuffed it

You were my first love

And though it was one-sided

It was something I don’t regret at all

Not even an iota
