I Trusted You

Poem dedicated to a Gujarati former colleague of mine; who has cheated me out of a huge sum of money. Here goes the content:

I trusted you

And cared for you

Like a true brother

But you took advantage of my credulous nature

And betrayed me

In a manner that I’ll never be able to forget

For the rest of my life

I trusted you

And funded you month-on-month

But I was a fool of the highest order

To fall for your sob stories

And thus allow my bank balance to plummet

To its very nadir

I trusted you

And told you all about my personal life

But you never told me anything about yours

Anything true, that is

You lied to me all the time

And completely destroyed my trust

I trusted you

And felt sorry for you

But never did I realise

How scheming and manipulative you were

Playing the victim card

And faking guilt and remorse

In order to ensure

That I never suspected anything was amiss

I trusted you

And thus did grave injustice to myself

As well as my family

Not to mention, my best friend

Now, I have finally learned my lesson

But the damage has already been done

Financially as well as mentally and psychologically

I trusted you

And you ruined my life

However, being a kind and gentle soul

I am giving you a chance

To repay all your debts

You had better take it

Otherwise, either you will find yourself in prison

Which, unfortunately does not seem likely

Given how cleverly you’ve played your cards

And chosen to hide behind your friend

Like the pathetic, snivelling coward you are

Thus reminding me of Wormtail, aka Peter Pettigrew

Or you will face divine retribution

After all, as the legendary saying goes

“As you sow, so shall you reap”
